How to double your vacation without spending a dime.

This tip has helped us see twice as many countries for the same price.

We have a strategy to get a bonus vacation every time we book a flight, especially international ones. We only take flights that have a long layover in another country we want to visit. 

For example: We are planning to travel to the Philippines and want to spend a few weeks there. We also want to travel to China but only want to spend a day or two there. We will look for flights that have a stop in China on the way there, back, or both, that are at least 12 hours in length. Some layovers are even a day or longer. 

There are two things to keep in mind when doing this:

1. In most international airports, you cannot check in your luggage sooner than 6 hours before your flight. Because of this, you’ll have to take your luggage with you during your long layover. We travel with our backpacking gear and find it’s much easier to get around when we can carry our bags instead of rolling them through the streets. There are limitations on bag sizes, if you choose to bring a backpacking bag and carry it on instead of checking it, so be sure to check the restrictions for your flight!

2. When looking for flights with a long layover, there is usually an option in the search bars to search only for flights with this criteria. However, if you use the search tool to find long layovers, you will notice that the airline will charge you extra. The only way to get a long layover for free is to not enter it into the search criteria for your flight, and instead to search straight from your location to your final destination and then search through all the flight options to find one with the longest layover in a place you want to go.
